Acupuncture
Q. What is acupuncture used
for?
A. The art of acupuncture
is a treatment in which fine needles are placed upon certain
points along the body to help achieve ideal balance of yin
and yang of the body's energy. Acupuncture is an ideal treatment
for any condition from sports injuries, chronic pain, cancer
and chronic diseases, headaches and migraines, anxiety and
panic disorders, PMS, the common cold and immune support.
The results can be truly amazing. I have seen chronic back
pain eliminated, anxiety, insomnia and depression controlled,
migraine headaches turn around and weight reduction to name
a few. The results are even more pronounced combined with
Chinese herbs. The conditions that acupuncture can treat are
endless.
Q. What type of needles that
are used in acupuncture and what does Qi mean?
A. Acupuncture is not painful.
The needles that are used are extremely small in diameter
and are much smaller than the typical needle used to draw
blood or give shots. At times, there may be a dull ache in
the area of the needle, but often patients do not even feel
it going in. At other times, patients feel a "sensation"
that travels to another part of the body and this is a good
sign. It is a sign that the Qi, the body's energy, is being
moved. Movement of Qi is indicative of an effective treatment.
Q. What is the response rate
and the effectiveness of acupuncture?
A. Everyone responds to acupuncture
in different ways. For example, I have had patients that are
so sensitive to acupuncture that chronic back pain was completely
gone after one treatment! This is not the normal circumstance.
A good rule of thumb is the longer that the condition has
been going on, then the more treatment it takes. The more
acute conditions, like the common cold or a freshly pulled
muscle usually only require one or two treatments.
