Cardiovascular Health

This month's article will be dealing with cardiovascular questions. A quick review will be helpful. Normally when an individual gets a lipid panel, it includes total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and VLDL. Consequently, there is a final ratio that is calculated from the above. Ideal goals are keeping your LDL at 100 or less and keeping your total cholesterol at 200 or less. A high HDL is definitely beneficial.

Q. - Can you discuss Nanabacteria?
A. - Nanobacteria sanguineum was reported in the Journal of Pathophysiology. Nanobacterium is described as teh smallest self-replicating organism ever detected. It is one of the smallest documented bacterias. It as discovered in 1988. The hypothesis is that Nanobacterium clings to calcified cardiovascular tissue, thus causing a more aggressive inflammatory process. One of the markers we use for this is C-reactive protein (CRP), which helps us measure vascular inflammation.

Q. - How is Nanobacteria treated?
A. - Nanobacterium is treated first by identification. Three methods exist for testing. One method is to utilize a CRP - high sensitivity. This will give you your inflammatory marker. The other is to use a calcium score marker for plaque. This is available at numerous facilities in Tucson. There are some independent and national laboratories that do specifically check for Nanobacteria.

Q. - If I do have Nanobacterium, is there any way to treat it?
A. - Studies have shown that some of the nutraceutical/botanicals such as Vitamin C, B6, Selenium, EDTA, and amino acid therapies can be helpful. Also for our patients, we utilize a low dose of anti-biotic therapies. some patients also respond well to IV Chelation therapeutics in conjunction with the above mentioned.

Q. - I have run chronically high levels of LDL with a high Cholesterol level. This has been a problem since my mid-thirties. I am also approximately 20-30 lbs. overweight and run a blood sugar level of 110. Any suggestions?
A. - Depending on what your values are for your total cholesterol and total LDL, you may want to consider utilizing a nutraceutical/botanical protocol. If you levels drastically exceed normal guidelines, then a medication along with nutraceutical/botanicals may be effective. You may want to consider keeping your body fat below 30 percent. It would be advantageous also to watch the amount of carbohydrates and refined sugars in your diet. We do offer complimentary body composition evaluations along with a review of our Metabolic Weight Management Program.
