Your Questions with Answers
Q - I have Rheumatoid Arthritis
and have recently been diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Disease
(IBD). I was a heavy consumer of NSAIDS. What alternatives
do I have?
A - Some of the newer
class prescriptive medications called COX-2 inhibitors may
reduce the potential for gastric/intestinal issues. However,
you may do well on a nutraceutical/botanical protocol such
as Infla Thera and EPA/DHA.
Q - I was diagnosed with Crohns
Disease approximately 10 years ago. My gastroenterologist
told me that my diet did not have any impact in terms of my
disease. Can you please explain?
A - For my patients dealing
with Crohns Disease, I find the mono-saccharide diet to be
extremely helpful, along with soluble and insoluble fibers.
Also eating small frequent meals seems to decrease the bloating
and distension that can go with Crohns Disease. Also, maintaining
proper GALT mucosal integrity is imperative. There are several
types of L-Glutamine, an amino acid that can be helpful in
maintaining proper cellular communication in the gastrointestinal
lining. There is a new test out, a Calprotectin assay that
may be of assistance.
Q - What are some anti-bacterial
herbs that are helpful for the intestines and what are some
helpful anti-fungals?
A - Anti-bacterial botanicals
consist of berberine, oregano, plant tannins and uva ursi.
Anti-fungals include berberine, plant tannins, uva ursi, caprylic,
garlic and undecylenic acid. I would suggest that you be tested
to see if you have a gram positive pathogen. This way, the
botanical/nutraceutical protocols can be selected especially
for your condition.
