Perimenopause

Women aged 35-50 frequently present with early signs of hormonal decline such as premenstrual irritability, anxiety, depression and headaches as well as restless sleep, chronic fatigue, declining libido, vaginal dryness, irregular menstrual cycles, palpitations and day or nighttime hot flashes. Nature defines this period in life as natural, but these symptoms are frustrating and often debilitating.

Epidemiological studies reveal that depression and anxiety disorders are two to three times more likely in women than men. The peak period is in the mid 30's and 40's. Many women are trying to balance various demands - home, career, children, their aging parents...while understanding their own health issues. This balancing act often leads to depression and anxiety. Let's look at a few other causational issues.

The increase in FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) sends messages to the ovaries, causing daytime confusion and mild depression. This endocrine shift results in a domino effect, consequently increasing stress hormones (epinephrine and norepinephrine) and an increase in cortisol, thus the person may exhibit some weight gain and mild edema.

Exposure to zenobiotic agents, for example pesticides, herbicides and petrochemicals, can alter estrogen metabolism, thereby increasing hot flashes and perimenopausal signs and symptoms. A simple test can be done to check the processing of estrogen.

Another issue that is problematic for many of my perimenopausal patients is immune dysfunction...an increase in allergies, sore throats and chronic fatigue can play havoc on the endocrine axis thus increasing anxiety, depression, sleeplessness, temperature disturbances and fibromyalgia.

Consider the following tests:

  • Estrogen Conversion (important for breast cancer prevention and estrogen metabolism
  • Fractionated Estrogen Test FSH, LH, total estrogen, progestrone and testosterone
  • Comprehensive metabolic, thyroid and adrenal panels
  • Chronic Fatigue Immune Profile
  • Zenobiotic (foreign) Exposure Testing, if applicable

Oral Supplements and hormones:

  • Milk Thistle
  • Fat Soluble Vitamin C
  • EFA's
  • Menopausal Multi Formula
  • DHEA and Pregnenilone

Lifestyle

  • Dietary changes - small frequent meals, eliminate food allergies
  • Exercise - consider weight training 3-4 times weekly
  • Stress reduction techniques - enjoy those moments of bliss
  • Daily journal writing helps to put thoughts and feelings into perspective
