Your Brain Is Your Second Gut

Our gastrointestinal system operates by many of the same hormones that our brains share. One of the key components to both systems is serotonin. If serotonin is deficient in our gastrointestinal tract we run the risks of gastrointestinal problems most commonly Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Irritable Bowel Syndrome effects can be devastating to ones life style. The two most common versions of I.B.S. include IBS-D (Diarrhea) or IBS-C (Constipation). Both of these syndromes can affect gastric emptying time.

Let’s examine some of the physiological dysfunctions of the colon. Too much water in the colon can cause diarrhea. Not enough water causes the risk of developing constipation or pencil like stools. Both of these conditions can cause the bowel to spasm.

Pathogens i.e. both bacterial and fungal can upset delicate lining of the GI tract causing leaky gut syndrome. Leaky gut syndrome is the inflammation of the intestinal lumen and proper diagnosis is crucial to assist in your recovery.

Proper fiber combining, soluble and insoluble, can reduce the signs and symptoms of I.B.S. by regulating the osmolarity of the G.I. tract. Various calcium and magnesium products can be beneficial to correct the water imbalance.

Stress Control is crucial (remember the 2nd brain). Increased stress can cause the gastro- intestinal tract to spasm thus increasing signs and symptoms of IBS. Try to calm the gut with peppermint or ginger tea. At times serotonin regulating medications may be of benefit with an anti-spasmodic, such as enteric-coated peppermint.

In conclusion
1. Rule out disease or infection
2. Control diet avoid common allergy causing foods
3. Plant based enzymes
4. Biofeedback therapy for stress reduction
5. Prescription medications when indicated
6. Balanced fiber ratios of soluble vs. insoluble
7.Yoga and meditation can help balance serotonin
