Weight Loss and Management
Often, I am told by my patients
that the holidays "were too good to them" and Santa
left some excess baggage. But take note, the weight may be
caused by a slow thyroid or by a hormonal imbalance.
Some of the common complaints
are cold intolerance, constipation, insomnia, dry skin, thin
hair, PMS, and a general decrease in vitality.
Frequently, we will see an under
active thyroid, which responds well to medications, botanicals
and vitamins, including B6, Selenium, Thyroid extract, Tyrosine
and Zinc. Botanicals that are nurturing to the thyroid are;
Nettles, Damian and Bladder Wrack. Occasionally, I will utilize
prescription therapy such as a low dose, time-released T3
with the above mentioned therapies.
Diet is very important, especially
the use of easy-to-digest proteins (chicken and fish). Watch
the amount of carbohydrates, i.e., sweets, breads, potatoes,
etc. Small "palm size" feedings are best. Remember
to avoid hypoglycemia as well as a diet high in soy, which
can bind thyroid hormones and cause problems.
Finally, monitor your body temperature
when you wake in the morning, and record the readings for
a one-week time period. Exercise is an important endocrine
regulator. In addition, don't forget that proper rest and
stress reduction are crucial.
Have a Safe and Happy New Year!
