Weight Management
Fatigue, lack of stamina, tightness
in clothing, increase in signs and symptoms of PMS and andropause
(male menopause), feeling of low self worth and depression
can all be attributed to weight gain. Unwanted weight gain
may also cause emotional issues regarding how you view food,
especially in social situations. But weight gain can also
cause larger problems for your overall health. Hypertension
(high blood pressure), hyperlipidemia (an increase in lipids
in the blood), Cardio Vascular disease and kidney disorders
can all be a result of being overweight. Obesity is now characterized
as being 30 lbs over body weight.
There are many medical reasons
that can lead to being overweight. The most obvious is hypothyroid.
Often I will see a Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) above
ideal levels (1.20-2.80). Patients will often come in with
signs and symptoms of cold intolerance, fatigue, changes in
body hair and dry skin.
With truncal obesity, the individual
will gain weight in the mid section - abdomen, hips and thigh
area. Many factors could contribute to this including hypothyroidism,
high insulin levels, hyperlipidemia, increased triglyceride
levels and increased estrogen levels.
Neuronal imbalance, a.k.a. decreased
serotonin levels, causes the individual to have an insatiable
craving for carbohydrates and sweets. Relief is short lived
for the craving happens throughout the day and more food is
needed. Thus creating the binge-eating syndrome.
As we all know, our frame of
mind can play a big factor in weight control. For instance,
increased stress will increase cortisol levels thus causing
the body to retain more fat. Swing shifts cause major changes
in teh Melatonin and serontonin levels, thus increasing weight
or causing difficulty with weight reduction.
Learning how to cope with those
stressors in our lives and to make better choices in how and
what we eat can go a long way in getting us back to the weight
that is ideal for our bodies. Incorporating some life style
modifications in diet, exercise and stress reduction will
not only get the weight off, but will also give you greater
energy and help to raise the self-esteem that seems to take
a beating while fighting a weight battle. Be sure to get daily
exercise and split it up. Exercise in the morning and evening,
to shift circadian cycles.
